Tito`s bunker – Atomic war command was the best-kept military secret in Yugoslavia.
The facility was under construction for 26 years, from 1953 until 1979.
The construction cost about 4.6 billion U.S. dollars. The facility spreads over 6,500 square feet.
It consists of 12 inter-connected blocks. It was built to withstand an attack with bombs up to 25 kilotons – far more powerful than the ones that were dropped on Hiroshima.
Facility D-0, Tito’s atomic war command, was built to accept, accommodate and protect President Tito, his family and his closest collaborators 350 people and enable successful management and command over the armed forces in case of nuclear warfare.
It’s a kind of labyrinth, a complex of residential areas, conference rooms, offices, halls for strategic planning, a ‘presidential bloc’ and other sections. The construction of the tunnel was done in total secrecy. Teams of workers often changed so no one would know too much about the bunker, and workers were brought there blindfolded so they wouldn’t know its exact location.
Bunker has an alternative exit which is not on the map, and go to 170 meters high hill above the object.
